Learn more. While using a VPN has a lot of benefits, those who start using the product for the first time encounter some inconveniences. In particular — printing photos and documents.
When you connect to a VPN server, all your traffic is rerouted through a remote network. The downside of connecting to the internet this way is that your wireless printer will still be connected to your local network.
Another option is to utilize the split tunneling feature, which is available on some VPNs, for example, Surfshark. With some VPNs, getting your computer to connect to your wireless printer is as simple as changing the settings.
This is possible if your VPN has an option to toggle the use of local network resources. Once enabled, this option allows you to connect to printers and other devices on your local network without disabling your VPN.
Print over VPN with Surfshark. Simply open your file, find the printing option, select your local printer, choose which pages you want to print, and print away.
If your printer has a screen, you can often see the IP address by selecting this option from the menu. If not, you can find it by disconnecting from your VPN temporarily and following these instructions:. This method works because when you use your VPN through your router , every device on your network connects to the same remote server — including your printer.
With your printer and computer both connected to the same network, you should have no problem sending through print jobs as usual. Moreover, router apps have other benefits, like:. Therefore, some VPNs, like Surfshark, have a special feature called split tunneling. As the name suggests, split tunneling splits your traffic into two parts:. If you print frequently from a PDF reader or text editor, for example, you can set your VPN to disallow that software from connecting. Keeping those apps on your local connection will then allow them to sync with your locally-connected printer.
There are many remote printing services available today, but PaperCut Mobility Print is a great free option. However, the cloud printing option is still in beta and only available on Windows and Chromebook devices, while Mac support is coming soon. Additionally, Mobility Print is meant for organizations and offices, not consumers. Thus, the setup process is a bit extensive. You can find plenty of guides on the PaperCut website on how to install and get everything running properly.
But in essence, you need to:. This is an oversimplified version of the necessary steps to get Cloud Print working with Mobility Print. Most printers connect to computers using standard USB AB cables, which you can pick up cheaply in most stationery and computing stores.
And remember, while it can take some time to work out the kinks of using a VPN, the security benefits far outweigh the negatives. There was no follow-up so I don't know whether it was resolved, although the answer was marked as "solved". I tried it, and Scan Doctor found the printer fine. But when I tried to run the tests, it couldn't communicate. It doesn't seem to make sense that it can find the printer but won't connect.
Also, if it's a question of not being able to find the IP, why can't one add the IP manually? To do this go:. What I can't get to work no matter what I try is trying to print to network folder. At least I can get print to computer Thank you!
That seemed to work. I just printed this post directly from the forum with the VPN connected. Didn't find what you were looking for? Ask the community.
Auto-suggest helps you quickly narrow down your search results by suggesting possible matches as you type. Showing results for. Search instead for. Did you mean:. Any suggestion on what would be the best way to this it up? New to this printing over VPN stuff..
You should be able to use whatever printer access method is most useful for you in the main office. After this VPN session disconnects chances are the remote machine will get a different IP address once it reconnects. IP address usage is always a fragile method of identifying targets and should be avoided if possible. Many Multi function USB printer can not be shared over network. Some allow sharing, but you would not be able to see it on the network. Just for the sake of arguement, what is the IP address range of the main office?
Also, have you considered setting the workstation statically while trying to diagnose this? Big Thanks to all of you guys!!! The workaround seems to be instead of going through Add Printer, Network Printer, browse, etc It takes about 1 min, but it does connect.
I've created a reservation for this IP as well, so it should not get assigned to any other workstations. You have a DNS issue that you should resolve so that all of your machines can be accessed via their hostnames rather than memorizing IP addresses. You should see the use defualt gateway on remote network.
That will reroute all your traffic on that machine through your remote office netowork anytime the VPN is on. This one burned me once. I usually uncheck this box. Check that and try to reconnect. If that is important to you.
Hardcoding IPs not using IP underneath which is obviously part of the network stack is fragile for many reasons. Using DNS names is important not as a memory aid, although that is nice, but because it makes the application or service IP agnostic. If a useful DNS entry was created for the remote printing service, such as offce2-print. Any amount of changes would result in nothing more than a single DNS entry change.
It saves a lot of headaches in addition to just being easier. I have a web application that is going through this right now. An IP address was put in directly to a configuration file and now that the network of the server has changed do to a datacenter relocation every remote client has to be updated manually when the move would have been transparent with DNS.
Obviously there are drawbacks to abstractions layers like DNS but, generally, system performance is so high these days that the benefits greatly outweigh the overhead.
