Could not contact master game server to retrieve

I bought this game today. Exit Steam. Navigate to.. Rename localconfig. Launch Steam. Play Ship. You're going to lose some of your Steam settings after you do this so be aware of that. You'll just have to go reset some of them under Steam's settings panel.

When you restart Steam after renaming the file a new one, with non-bogus license info, is created. There is actually a way to edit this file to remove the bogus license info which is what is causing this issue without clearing your Steam settings but it's a little too complicated a procedure to expect everyone to be able to work through it.

If you have more than one account, proceed with caution as there isn't a very easy way for me to describe how to figure out which is which. But if you chose the wrong one you can always remove the new localconfig. This has been a problem for a long, long time now with this game and I'm surprised the new owners of it still have yet to address the problem. It happens a lot with brand new installs, which surely turns people away from the game.

Lots of people probably don't look for help and just assume that since the game is so old that the MP is just dead. Sadly, that's the only thing that kept the game alive over the long term. Doesn't work for me It's working for me right now so it's not actually a problem with the master servers.

Did you just close all the Steam windows when you did it or did you actually exit out of Steam? OK, I am also getting this now. Looks like it could be an issue with the master servers after all.
